Intercalation

2015, Box Freiraum, Berlin

Performer: Michael Burditt Norton, dancer and actor

The performance Intercalation thematises curatorial practice and the assumption that matter has a will of its own. To this end, I invited a systemic constellator to ‘virtually’ set up the sculptures from the 2013 exhibition Homecomings in the Freiraum in der Box in Berlin once again. In the systemic constellation, the boundaries of space and time are removed in order to bring the past, present and future into a direct connection with each other, after which the statements and movements of the sculptures' representatives were translated into a choreography. Alternately, the statements and movements of the sculptures' representatives were translated into movements with quotes from Jean Luc Nancy's “Corpus” by Michael Burditt Norton.

The word intercalation can be described with three definitions: the insertion of a molecule into DNA, an ion in a multi-layered solid such as graphite, the insertion of one narrative strand into another. The performance is intended to enable the reading of these three definitions and implies the possibility of simultaneity.
